We are the Misfit Toys Team #3513, A FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition team based out of KTEC (Kootenai Technical Education Campus) with high school age members from all over Post Falls, Rathdrum, Hayden, Spirit Lake and Coeur d’ Alene. Being a team member of FIRST opens students up to a number of excellent opportunities. Along with competing in FRC, our team focuses on raising funds as well as giving back to the local area through volunteering and community outreach.
The Misfit Toys’ mission is to achieve success in the various aspects of FIRST Robotics Competition by promoting community awareness through engineering, technology and business. At the same time, we are also expanding our own personal growth within the team and paving the way for future generations through the help of our mentoring, growth, and education.
We Made it to the Finals!
This year our team traveled to Boise, Idaho to compete in the first ever Idaho Regional at Boise State University. We competed against teams from Minnesota, Texas, California, Oregon, Utah, and Idaho; there were thirty teams that we battled against to climb up the ranks. By the time finals began, we had not made it to the top eight, but were hopeful for an alliance. Like something from a movie, the the top eight chose one partner for an alliance, then the line snaked back, each team choosing another partner. At the beginning of the line again, all other alliances chosen, the fist ranked team was asked who they chose for their partner... and then our name was called. Looking into the stands, our team members were jumping up to hug each other and yelling in joy after the intense moment of anticipation, all of us were very shocked and excited that not only were we chosen, but we were picked by a first ranked team. Coming into the quarter-finals, we were carefully optimistic-hoping for the best but expecting the worst-and to our surprise, we won the first round by a land slide. We moved on to compete in the second round, then the third, and then the fourth, winning each round to our utter elation. Our team progressed into the semi-finals, now going up to compete against the best four teams in the competition, and proved ourselves worthy of our alliance by winning each round of the semi-finals and gaining monumental ground. Coming into the finals we competed against the other top alliance in the competition, and we finished with second place with a record of winning in all other rounds in the finals. Our team shocked everyone with our talent and skill, and we were surprised by the progress we made because of our winning streak. We are very proud and happy about our placement as second at the first Idaho Regional, and were glad that we could participate in this milestone regional. Our team members came home tired but overjoyed at our accomplishments. We want to thank all of our team members, mentors, and sponsors that helped us get to this point. We are very excited for next year's season and for what we will be able to accomplish.
